The Lottery In Shirley Jackson's The Lottery it's about a village that pulls a bunch of pieces of paper to see which family has "won" the lottery. The village does this because it is considered a tradition in the village and some people in the village don't want to break the tradition. Once all the families pull their pieces of paper they look to see which family "Got it". After the family that got the paper that has the lottery, they get that entire family to pull more pieces of paper.
In the lottery people are sacrificed each year in order to stop the decreasing of the villages crops. Some people might look at it as crucial and some might look at it as a fun tradition. The lottery takes place in a small village consisting of 300 people , The people in this village are rural and old fashion which is one of the reasons why they still haven’t got rid of this horrific ritual. This story gives off a somber and scary feeling to the reader. How is the lottery conducted?
The women allow the appearance of ignorance. On the twenty-seventh of June Tessie Hutchinson "Clean forgot what day it [is]" and "the kids [are] gone" to the lottery leaving her at home doing chores alone. The need of a reminder or a person to tell her where and when to do things shows that a woman does not have the capability to think for herself. If she is not directly told then she will not do.

In her story "The Lottery", Shirley Jackson implies the negative consequences of blindly following tradition through the acceptance, by the villagers, of the tradition of the lottery. Jackson suggests that the people of the village are afraid to give up the little tradition they have, even if it is not good. Every year after the lottery, the conductor of the lottery, Mr. Summers suggests that they should build a new box but, “No one [likes] to upset even as much tradition as [is] represented by the box.” (Jackson, 1). The black box symbolizes ritual and tradition.

When it comes, they like to celebrate it with the correct rules and the correct objects so they can feel more comfortable. Everyone need to take a slip of paper from a small black box, and the paper with a black dot in it means that the family is the winner, then they raffle again; Bill Hutchinson, who was the husband of the protagonist Tessie Hutchinson picked a paper with a black dot in it, that meant that Tessie was the winner of the lottery, then she starts complaining because the drawing was not conducted properly. At the end, the townspeople moved off to a cleared spot outside the town and they begin stoning her to death (Jackson).
The gathering and guarding of the pile of stones suggests that the children were preparing for the lottery’s conclusion, and even anticipate participating in it as if it is a game of dodgeball. The character, Tessie Hutchinson, her emotions about this lottery is that she thinks it is unfair. Mrs. Hutchinson thinks the lottery is unfair because they didn't give her family enough time to pick a slip. But i think it was fair because everyone takes their own time.

In the story, the author uses the treatment of the females characters against its male counter parts to illustrate how women are view as second-class citizens, and how disrespected, and stereotypical they are. An example of this is showed in the very beginning of the story, where Jackson writes ‘’ against the raids of the other boys.
