Dec. 2022 Romeo and Juliet: Impulse and a Future Warning Impulse is an act done without thinking, unconsciously and many around the world experience it, however not pleasantly. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, tragedy and impulse are very common and happen pretty often. Impulse, specifically in Romeo and Juliet is sent out as a warning to the many aspiring young teenagers around the world. Impulsive acts happen quite often in Romeo and Juliet but in all those acts 3 things remain constant and that is rushing into things, Lack of emotional control, and not thinking carefully before acting. Romeo and Juliet tend to rush into things, for example they get married practically the same day they met: “What o’clock tomorrow shall I send to thee”(Act 2, Sc.2, 180-181). Romeo and Juliet rush into their marriage as after they have a discussion during the night they decide that it is appropriate to get married the very next morning; thus Juliet here is asking Romeo when she shall send him the marriage letter. This exact marriage where they rushed into things will lead to the tragic ending that is at the end of Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare showed us an example of not acting/thinking carefully as to try and give teenagers now and then a lesson about that. In the story more specifically after Romeo’s banishment, Juliet goes through so much trouble just in the attempt to convince her parents to not wed her to Paris. She comes up with the wildest solutions and even goes as far as threatening the Friar to commit suicide:I will not marry yet, and when I do I swear it shall be Romeo whom you know I hate, Rather than Paris” (Act 3, Sc 5, 126-128). When Juliet heard about the news of her arranged marriage with Paris, she tries to come up with excuses due to her not thinking properly and panicking, however if she had thought it through properly and had just told her parents that she was already married the tragic ending of this play would most likely have been different. Teenagers will usually go around a point instead of directly stating it which can lead to fatal results. At last, thinking is controllable, however stress and impulse are not and when put into a tight situation you will lose your ability to think rationally which will cause impulse to take over, leading you to make self destructive
