Courage, weakness, and truth are personality traits that many authors incorporate into their characters. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller has three characters that are strong representations of these character traits. The Crucible is about these three things, which are represented by Giles Corey, Mary Warren, and Reverend John Hale. Corey represents courage perfectly in The Crucible. Corey has enough courage to accuse Thomas Putnam of “reaching out for land” in court (Miller III,1074).
The Crucible was written in 1952 by Arthur Miller, the play delivers many messages and carries many themes throughout. Nearly every character in the play is put to the test to display an act of courage, weakness, or truth. Some characters lack these traits and never learn to have courage or display honesty. However, most characters are very courageous and demonstrate these acts throughout the whole play. Overall the theme of the The Crucible boils down to being about honesty, weakness, and courage.
Based off both of this text, one can see that in a time or crisis, people will abandon the morals and ethics they have, and essentially sacrifice the people around them to save themselves. The Crucible starts with small talk about girls dancing in the forest, and somehow, this begins to turn into talk of those girls being witches. As the story picks up, friends begin turning on each other. Abigail, a devious character, while in a heated argument with Betty and Mary on what to confess states, “We danced.
The Crucible takes readers through the lives of many different characters and their lives. We see characters harden toward each other, stay firm in their wickedness, as well as completely change their mind on matters. There are many different dynamics happening during this play simultaneously as well as drastic changes from act to act. The Crucible shows depth in human interactions. With there being many different layers to this play a prominent color is weakness.
Every person has some kind of flaw; no one is completely perfect. One of humanity’s biggest flaws is that people would do anything to help themselves. I have been in many situations where I saved myself by sacrificing someone else. For example when my parents caught me coming home after curfew, I also ratted out my brother in order to lessen my punishment and take all the attention away from myself. Everyone is selfish in one way or another, always trying to do what is best for themselves.

There are many characters in the Crucible who are guilty of taking innocent lives, but there are three major characters who, without a doubt, are the most at blame. The play takes place in the city of Salem, a city filled with people that would do anything to keep their reputation clean. Throughout the play, Miller is introducing multiple characters that experience changes in their decisions and negatively influence more people eventually leading up to the witch trials. The main point that the story revolves around is that people would rather lie and blame someone else instead of confessing and accepting the punishment.
Arthur Miller's The Crucible highlights a human frailty, arrogance, responsible for the witch hysteria in the 1690s. Each character portrays arrogance which make him abuse power. The play explores the human nature of being arrogant and the fear of tarnishing one's reputation, by acting unmorally. Through Hale's, Parris's, and Danforth's actions, Miller indicates that arrogance is the frailty most responsible for the witch hysteria.

A major theme that stuck out in this story was many people will tell lies to get what they want. This theme shows throughout the entire story and is very relevant in today's society.

Women are often portrayed as being cold and cruel if they don’t fit the picture of a happy housewife, and that’s how Elizabeth Proctor was depicted.

The trials were basically a big test which helped figuring out whether or not people were guilty of witchcraft. This is an example of what a crucible is. The book the crucible is based off of a town called Salem in Massachusetts. The town is well known because of their witch hunts they had in the 17th century. The witch hunts were mostly based off of suspicion, or because someone blamed someone of being a witch because he or she disliked this person. If you were accused of being a witch then your public image was ruined or put to death.
