Hobbit Essay
People will always be overcome by power and wealth. The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkein. The Hobbit is a novel about a hobbit named Bilbo who goes on an adventure with 13 dwarves and a wizard named Gandalf. They go to kill a dragon named Smaug to claim the riches under the mountain. The treasure under the mountain was obtained by Thorin's grandfather the king under the mountain before being attacked by Smaug. Smaug, The Master of Lake Town, and Thorin all show greed and become corrupt. But Bilbo and Elrond stray away from greed. The Hobbit is a prime example of how power and wealth corrupt.
Elrond is a good example of being humble and not accepting temptation. Elrond frowns on the band of dwarves

When the dwarves showed up he was frightened that if they really were the king under the mountain that could be trouble for they might follow the dwarves instead of him. In chapter 10 the dwarves show up at lake town claiming to be king under the mountain. “Then for the first time the Master was surprised and a little frightened” (171). When Bard killed Smaug everyone was calling him a hero and a true king. In chapter 14 Bard kills Smaug. “King Bard; they shouted; but the Master ground his chattering teeth” (213). The Master was not happy that they were calling him a king, he didn’t want to lose power. At first Bilbo didn’t like the adventure, “Poor Bilbo couldn’t bear it any longer, at may never return he began to feel a shriek coming up inside, and very soon it burst out like the whistle of an engine coming out of a tunnel” (23). Bilbo didn’t like the stories they were telling and the challenges they would face. His Took side grew on him as the adventure went on. Bilbo tried to fit into the burglar Gandalf said he would be, but it wasn’t his time yet. “Then Bilbo plucked up the courage and put his little hand in William's enormous pocket”(38). The trolls caught Bilbo trying to steal, but it taught Bilbo a lesson. Bilbo would find the ring but only use it in times of great need and danger. “He guessed as well as he could and crawled along for a good way till suddenly his hand met what felt like a tiny ring of cold metal laying on the tunnel floor” (65). He used the ring responsibly and was humble with it. Bilbo was humble; he could have taken his 1/14th share home but he only took two chests. “In the end he would only take two small chests… ‘That will be quite as much as I can manage’” (246). When Bilbo got home his house was being auctioned off. Bilbo lost his reputation as a calm and trustable hobbit. He didn’t care though he was happy with his adventure and his Took side had taken
