Who is responsible for Macbeth’s corruption? In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, Macbeth is introduced as a courageous, noble hero of Scotland, who has bravely defeated the Norwegians. The play begins with three witches discussing Macbeth’s fate of rising to power. Shortly after, Macbeth encounters these witches and learns the prophecies. He becomes obsessed with the idea of fulfilling his destiny to be king and is willing to overcome anyone who becomes a threat to his kingship. Macbeth’s downfall and corruption is due to the witches prophecies and equivocations, his wife’s manipulations and scheming, and ultimately his own ambition and tragic flaw of always resorting to violence. When people have a dilemma they naturally turn towards people they love; Macbeth quickly turns to her when he is unsure about whether he should kill King Duncan. After receiving the news of the prophecy, she begins her conspiracy against the king and begins to manipulate Macbeth into committing the deed. Lady Macbeth attacks his manhood in her manipulations. She says to him, “Wouldst thou have that which thou esteem’st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine own esteem”(1.7.41-43) meaning will you take the crown you desire or will you be a coward. She attacks his manhood again stating, “When you durst do it, then you were a man”(1.7.49), and this finally persuades him to commit the murder of Duncan.
