Zionism, is the belief of the Jewish people going back to their homeland, a land that was sacked and destroyed in 70 A.D. at the hand of the Roman Empire. When the Jewish people were displaced from their home they faced discrimination wherever they went. With discrimination, persecution, and eventual execution give rise to the belief of Zionism, and led to the Israel-Palestine conflict that still endures in modern day. The fictional account of the conflict between the Jewish and Palestine people are documented in Khirbet Khizeh, giving the reader the anxiety of a fictionalized account of removing people from their home. Finally, on May 14, 1948 Israel is declared an official state. The next day on May 15, 1948, a war broke out between Israel and the rivaling Arab states. The war, from the Arab point of view, was an infringement of their sovereignty, and another form of English colonialism. The Arab states were already being treated poorly by the British so the distrust between the two grew more due to the founding of the state of Israel and the war between the two states. The British came into play because of the cruelty they had committed against the Jews. In a historical context, World War II has just come to an end roughly three years prior to Israel being declared a state. World War II resulted in the death of about 6 million Jews. Europe had turned their backs on the those who needed them the most, and an attempt to save face they allowed for Zionism to go so far to cover up the shame Europe had been feeling. “As the extent of the Nazi atrocities became known, the public conscience of the West came to embrace the notion that the settlement of the surviving Jews in Palestine would atone for the horrors of Western civilization had inflicted upon them. For example, when Khirbet Khizeh was published it was 1948, just months after the end of the war. Although it is a fictionalized account, it rang true to those who read the novella. Following the success of the novella, Khirbet Khizeh was circulated into the curriculum for Israeli high schoolers. And by doing so proved that the Ministry of Education had the capability of looking at what they had to another group of people. The afterwards of the novella gives more insight to the lull of Zionism. “In 2002, settlers from Itamar and Tapuach- two of the most predatory Israeli settlements in Samaria-drive the inhabitants of Kafr Yanun from their village.” Luckily, Arab-Jewish partnership was able to bring those who were driven out of their back, this event still happened in the 21st century. Fifty four years had pass from the end of the 1948 war to this event in 2002, and still Palestinians were still pushed out of their homeland to make room for Jewish immigration.
