In the excerpt from Anne of Green Gables, Anne declares that she took and lost Marilla's amethyst brooch because she felt that if she didn't confess, she would not have been able to go to the town picnic. Instead, her confession turned on her, and she was not allowed to go. If I was in the same situation, I would have politely explained that I really had no idea what had happened to the brooch. Even if Marilla still didn't believe me, it is always better to tell the truth. You can get into a lot worse trouble for lying than for accidentally losing something. Even though Anne thought it was better for her to make up a story, in the end, she still got in trouble, so it wasn't worth it.
