Chapter 7 of Fast Food Nation discussed the starting of meatpacking industry and its downfalls. At first, Iowa Beef Packers (IBP) used the same principle as McDonald’s principle to make fast foods. IBP hired unskilled workers just to do simple and repeated work all day. However, competition with other companies made IBP low wages and health insurance options. This caused slaughterhouses to move West to gain cheap labor and land.

According to food writer Anastacia Marx de Salcedo, author of the new book Combat-Ready Kitchen: How the U.S. Military Shapes the Way You Eat, many packaged, processed foods Americans see on grocery store shelves and in refrigerator cases today were originally intended to serve as combat rations for soldiers out in the battlefield. Eric Schlosser starts the first chapter by describing the early life of Carl Karcher. Originally from Ohio he moved to Southern California to work for his uncle. Schlosser then describes the area through Carl’s viewpoint of Anaheim, California. The rural land is used to farm citrus fruits and nuts. Carl later gets married and buys a hot dog stand.
World hunger has always been a problem that has plagued humanity, and through the years, it has remained an almost impossible problem to solve. However, industrialized agriculture has become a possible solution to world hunger with its ability to produce more food on less land than traditional methods. Industrialized agriculture is the solution Robert Paarlberg offers in his article, “Attention Whole Food Shoppers” which first appeared in April 2010 edition of Foreign Policy. Paarlberg attempts to use specific criteria to demonstrate the benefits of industrialized agriculture, such as its impacts on world hunger, the income gap, and global politics. Paarlberg was to an extent successful at proving his points and persuading his intended audience.
In John Updike’s short story “A&P,” Sammy is the narrator and cashier at the grocery story A&P. The author uses dynamic characters with immensely different personalities to portray conformity and rebellion in our society. Through out the story Sammy challenges conformity and social norms at his work place for personal reasons. Sammy is very bitter character and taken as a realist which fuels the story. Queenie, a rebel against conformity, sparks Sammy’s emotions after the way she is treated by his boss Langel when she walks into the grocery store with nothing but a bikini covering her skin.
The twentieth century within the United States saw great changes when it came to the issue of labor and the role that workers interacted with company owners with the government increasing it role in private business matters. The growth of the labor movement and the growth of a workers ability to collective bargain was heavily influenced by Congressional action. Prior to the Second World War, the federal government did not have much involvement in the struggle between private businesses and organized labor, but this changed in light of the war. The government had played a very small role in the lives of Americans in regards to labor and to regulating corporations, which prompted a mass economic down turn when the bubble that the United States
In the article “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating” by Mary Maxfield published in 2012 states that people’s knowledge about health, is more so based on culture or origin. Rather than what is actually healthy. She also claims that as a culture “we no longer discuss healthy eating without also discussing healthy weights. Due to Maxfield’s claim that as a culture, we do not make conscious dieting decisions about healthy foods and normal weight, I disagree with that for a few reasons. There are many people in America that are health conscious, and some people truly have their own knowledge about what is healthy weight and a healthy diet.

" It is normal for everyone to make mistakes and find a way to overcome, because no one can go through life without problems. Average people have struggles and a story, but famous people do as well. If someone is famous, most people have heard her story and how she arrived to where she is.
Finding one passion could be tricky. Sometimes we confuse passion with skills, passion is something that you do and enjoy no matter how tired or even if it doesn’t make you a millionaire. Skills are something that you are good at but you don’t enjoy, one will continue on this path because we need to pay our bills. This doesn’t make it right or wrong but we should be happy with ourselves doing what we enjoy.
The short story, Chef’s house, is written by Raymond Carver in 1983. This essay will include an analysis of the short story, a summary but mainly focus on the themes in the text, the style of writing and the effect it has. In the short story, we are introduced to Wes, a middle-aged man, and he has rented a house from another man called Chef. Wes – the main character, is a recovering alcoholic. He separated from his wife, Edna, and goes to live by the ocean, in a house he has rented from another recovered alcoholic, Chef.
