Religion and Political Elections In the United States, it is not uncommon to hear the president, or other political figures, utter the words, “God Bless America”. This “God Talk” has come to be expected of those in office, and if someone were to not use it people would notice and distrust them. Despite the fact that the United States does not have a State Religion, religious rhetoric is used by politicians all the time to garner goodwill with their constituents. This is a fact that is virtually unique to the United States when comparing it to other developed nations around the world. Religious rhetoric can be seen particularly during elections. Beyond that, people vote the way that their religious groups do which leads politicians to try and appeal to various religious groups to gain votes and favor. This article, entitled “Religion and American Politics from a Global Perspective”, starts by explaining why religion should not have an effect on the political system in the country. It explains the argument that politics should not have a large effect because of the religious diversity in the United States. The article then goes on to talk about the opposing view, that religion does indeed play a large role. In this piece, Froese also compares the United States to other developed countries and how they deal with religion in the political arena. This article supports the idea that religion does in fact plays a significant, and vastly different, role in the United States political system than in other developed countries.
