The American Election System has been the symbol of how our democracy has elected our members of our government, whether a person votes for a mayor of a town or for a Representative in Congress. The electoral vote is a prime example, but to dispel the myth, bigger states don’t have much power, but smaller states do. This was partly because of the Connecticut Compromise in 1787, because according to Slonim Shlomo, author of the article, ““The Electoral College at Philadelphia: The Evolution of an Ad Hoc Congress”, states “simply a second round of the Connecticut Compromise in settling large state-small state differences.” The mechanics of choosing presidents thus benefited the smaller states, guaranteeing them a greater proportion of electoral power than they should have enjoyed on the basis of their population numbers alone for the Selection of a President,” (Shlomo) The State of Wyoming, for example, has an electoral vote of 3, while the State of California has an electoral vote of 55, but for the people of Wyoming, one electoral vote counts for an average of 300,000 votes, since the population is less than 140,000, while the people of California’s electoral vote counts for 150,000, despite bigger population of around 420,000, meaning it takes three times as many votes in California to beat Wyoming.
