In this passage Duncan uses 2 contrasting feelings/tones to emphasize the existential crisis that Gus is going through. The particular tones in the passage are numb and grim. Duncan describes Gus’s feelings and sensations in a numb way by using words like “Palpable emptiness”, “desolate”, and “nothing”. Duncan does this to intimately describe how Gus is truly feeling. TO really drive home how numb Gus truly is, Duncan repeats the word nothing frequently. Duncan could’ve just said “suddenly Gus realized he was emotionally vacant”. But that wouldn’t be as entertaining/intimate for the reader. This personally sends me chills. It connects with me because there are times when I have had an existential crisis and that’s how I’ve felt. It is shocking
