Exorcism Exorcism means expelling out the evil spirits that invade the human body. Exorcism exists in many religions such as Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Taoism, and Buddhism. In contrast to the early 1960s and the mid-1970s when there was a 50% increase in the number of exorcisms performed, most of the requested and performed exorcism began to decline in the 18th century and occurred rarely in the 20th century. The exorcists always mention God, Jesus, and/or several different angels and archangels to interpose with exorcism. Most of the exorcists believe that any mature Christian can perform exorcism, not just members of clergy and they believe also the authority given to them by the Father, Son, and Holy spirit is the source of their ability to expel demons. People who are considered as possessed by evil spirit are not regarded as evil in themselves and they are not responsible for their actions, because possession means unwilling manipulation by a demon resulting in harm to self or others. Furthermore, practitioners consider exorcism as cure rather than a punishment. Exorcism in Islam is called ruqya, and the purpose of it is to repair the damage damaged believed caused by sihr, Witchcraft or Evileye. There are several reasons to be possessed by something bad in Islam. To clarify, the white satan (Iblis) is said to be a tempter; whispering evil suggestions to the human heart. Jinn are often held in folklore to be able to enter a human body physically or haunting them mentally.
