How Climate and Geography Affected Mendocino Mendocino is a nice little spot by the ocean with lots of redwoods, oh and it’s really, really, isolated. The town was founded in the 1850’s and was originally a Pomo settlement called Buldam, then became a logging town and was actually named Meiggsville after Henry Meggs, and eventually became Mendocino after the spanish explorer Antonio de Mendoza. So the Pomo were a Native American tribe that was linked by location, and language, and less by political and social links. Therefore they lived in about a hundred small tribes up and down the mendocino coast and relied on mendocino county’s large redwood forests for hunting and the fact that they lived by the coast made fishing a thing that they could do. The Settlers who first came here originally came here because of the logging. Alright now logging was possibly the biggest thing in mendocino’s history because it drew in so many people and got the town so much money and buiseness that it eventually took off and became quit the flourishing town in its best days. Originally logging was done with hand axes and was pulled by donkeys and cattle but as you can suspect the humongous redwoods weren't very easy to cut with hand axes so they eventually went on and used two man saws thus increasing the amount of …show more content…

The ocean also helped the pomos because they could fish for food and the early settlers could as well. Also the artists have helped the economy by drawing in buiseness from art lovers and the ocean has drawn in photographers looking for the right shot. Then there are the redwoods, the original reason this town was created and now also a huge tourist attraction, which is super annoying because all the tourists drive really slowly trying to get a good view of the redwoods on my drive
