How Social Marketing Helped Me be a Better Scrum Master Contrary to popular belief, Social Marketing is not about utilizing social media like Facebook, Twitter etc. for marketing of products or services. In fact, Social Marketing was born many decades before social media. Social Marketing is about utilizing commercial marketing approach (popularly known as 4Ps) for changing behavior of target audiences. Importance of behavior change of target audiences in social marketing is as important as profit in a business. As many of you have faced, changing behavior of people is not that easy. It was because people do not want to come out of their comfort zones and try a new thing. I understood it very well, because it is natural. People do not easily believe in something that they have only heard of but not felt. I remembered those days, when I worked as a project manager (not software related) in a Social Marketing campaign. I wanted to experiment my team members giving a try if I can change their behavior to adapt to Scrum mindset utilizing Social Marketing approach. It worked very well and now I admit that the Social Marketing approach works best in bringing discipline among team members to ‘SHU’ stage of ‘SHU-HA-RI’ model. As a previous social marketer, I identified my target audiences, understood their barriers to adopting Scrum and tailored a plan to help them in the organization to thrive in Scrum
