In the following essay, I shall discuss the breaking down and absorption of glucose into the bloodstream by villi in the small intestine. In doing so, the three main pathways involved shall be explored, which include glycolysis, the Kreb’s cycle and chemiosmosis.
Once glucose is absorbed into the bloodstream by the villi, it circulates until it is absorbed by a cell in a process known as facilitated diffusion. This form of transportation, across a cell membrane, is useful, particularly in the absorption of glucose. Facultative transporters, in this case, glucose transporters cause the movement of glucose molecules from an area of high concentration, such as the surrounding blood supply, to a low concentration, which is, in this instance, the inside of the cell.
