Social service is an institution or agency organized with the primary intension of advancing the social conditions of a community especially those of the disadvantaged (/minority) in society. Any of these services are designed to alleviate the poor conditions of living and improve on the welfare of certain parts of society noting especially the poor, women, the elderly and the general welfare of children. People who work for such agencies are usually called social workers and they provide a wide array of services that range from counselling through guidance and assistance. There are many programs that exist today in the United States which are all designed to meet some or all of the goals and objectives aforementioned. Among the plethora of social service programs that exist, feature temporary assistance programs, child support programs, benefits for immigrants programs, Medicaid, child nutrition programs and food stamp programs. That is the major and most apparent problem faced by social services. The second problem, which leans more to the philosophical dimension of social services rather than financial is the issue of expansion of social services and the inherent ‘cycle of dependence’ that it inevitably initiates. Other social and economic problems faced by this agency born from the goodwill of our citizens and government are a result of the unforeseen consequences of what this system can create and will be discussed as this research paper develops.
