1. What event in the plot of Phantom of the opera could be considered the inciting incident? Reveals the protagonist and antagonist.
The event in which the protagonist is introduced would be, when Madame Giry informs the new owners that Christine is the understudy for Carlotta, and has an amazing voice. Christine performs in Carlotta’s place and overjoyed with her first performance as lead, Christine goes to pry to her father to thank him and the “Angel of Music.” The antagonist is introduced when he comes to take Christine back to his layer under the opera house, promising her that he is the “Angel of Music,” and her singing tutor.
2. What is the major dramatic question in Phantom of the opera?
The major dramatic question would be who Christine truly loves, the phantom who gave her the attention she needed, or Raoul, the long lost love interest from her past. During the play the phantom is shown to be kind, caring, mysterious, and a teacher to young Christine. Raoul on the other hand, gives his attention to her only after she sings on stage, Christine and Raoul have similar feelings but there is another competing for her heart now. Christine’s heart is torn; she loves Raoul but admires the phantom.

Angered by Christine removing his mask during his opera, the phantom takes her to his layer informing her that she shall never again see the light of day. Witnessing his secret fiancé being captured Raoul, aided by Madame Giry, heads to the phantoms layer. Becoming ensnared in one of the phantoms traps Raoul is nearly drowned but frees himself and reaches the phantoms
