The major developmental task of the preschool-age child
There are many developmental stages in life; figuring them out is all part of the journey. The task that the preschool-age child, ages three to five go through are exceptionally important when preparing to start school. This can be quit challenging for this age group of children when they are use to having their parents at their sides. They have to adapt to a cooperative type of play like learning to share and figuring out that they might be wrong sometimes. Next is the task of learning the control of body function. Preschool age children have to come to the acceptance of separation. The increase in communication skills, memory and attention span are the last developmental tasks that would prepare a child for a future in school.

Between ages one and five their weight will have only doubled. The child will grow taller and loose what is known as “baby fat”. 20/20 vision will maybe be developed by school age and all 20 primary teeth have been erupted. Cognitive growth has an increasing development of language and symbolic functioning. Independence becomes established as the child starts to find enjoyment away from mom and dad. By the time the child reaches age four, they may become more interested in death and wondering when they will die, this can be a challenging stage for the child and the parent. Parents often become alarmed when their child asks these sorts of questions, but the parents should remain calm and explain in terms that the child will understand. When the child is closer to school age, they are at more of the content stage. Children are more responsible and find pleasure in doing tasks themselves. By the time the child reaches five years old they have a better comprehension of television and if not limited they many want to spend a greater amount of time watching
