The principal beliefs of the ancient Egyptian religion: Afterlife: The ancient Egyptian believed that there is an underworld below the earth, which it is called Duat. Every Egyptian would need to pass through after death. Parts of the underworld were full of risks, such as lakes of fires and poisonous snakes. Life and Death were seen by the Egyptians as periods of progress to a better life in the next world. There is a guidebook that contained spells and instructions to ensure safe passage through the dangers of the Underworld. This book called “The book of the Dead”. In the Ancient Egyptian religion some animals were seen as sacred as they believed that the Spirit of a God lives in these animals which were respected and worshipped as reincarnated Gods during their lifetimes. The heart was considered to be the place of the Ka o The "Ba" - said to appear from the body at death. Just like a ghost who could visit previous haunts of the earthly world o The "Akh" - centerpoint of each person's divine soul The weighting of the heart: The ancient Egypt believed that, when they died they will be judged on their behaviours during their life before the state of Afterlife. This judgment ceremony was called “The weighting of the heart”. This ceremony was mentioned in the “Book of the dead”. Pharaohs believed that they became gods in the afterlife. Temples were where the gods lived and thus temples built in every city. They allowed for worship and meant that the particular god was always available. Therefore, the pharaohs used this belief and built to themselves huge tombs to live in the afterlife and state themselves as true gods in the spiritual life after death.
