Psalm.16:18 tells us “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Johnny should not have gone to the Lytes to claim them as his kin. There are three reasons why Johnny was foolish to go to the Lytes to claim he was there kin. He endured great humiliation, he broke his promise to his mother and suffered great peril. Johnny suffered great humiliation once his silver cup was taken from him, as he was teased by the servants and accused of proposing to Lavinia and especially while he was falsely accused of being a thief. He broke his promise to his mother. His mother had strictly warned him not to go to the Lytes unless things were at their absolute worst. As it stood, this was simply not the case when Johnny senselessly
