Explain What Happens To The Mass Of Copper And Sulfur Lab

539 Words3 Pages

The purpose of this experiment was to determine what happens to the mass of copper and sulfur when chemically combined. The hypothesis was that the mass of copper and sulfur will go down when they are chemically combined. The hypothesis was rejected because the individual results were -0.01 grams and because of the specificity of the mass scale, -0.01 grams is counted as a difference of zero grams. The individual results was that the mass had a difference of zero grams. There were many individual observations. As soon as the alcohol burner was lit, the sulfur started to melt and was turning into a liquid. Eventually, all of the sulfur powder is gone and instead there is a yellow liquid. The liquid is turning reddish brown with black on the …show more content…

There is what looks like yellow condensation on the inside of the test tube. After being blown out, there is still what looks like yellow bubbles on the inside of the test tube and the brownish red color is still on the bottom. The inside of the test tube looks like a lava lamp and the test tube is becoming less foggy. The reddish color disappears and the bottom becomes black. The yellow bubbles start to disappear and there are no more changes after about five minutes of cooling. After the test tube is smashed with the hammer, it has a very strong odor and there are little pellet indentations in the metal. The inside of the metal is a greyish blue color. The outside is a brownish yellow color. The metal is a solid and some pellets of regular copper survived heating. The metal is shiny black on the outside. In the class, six groups had no difference in mass, two groups had a slight change in mass. These groups had a difference of -0.02 or -0.03 grams. One group had a significant change in mass. This group had a difference of -0.04 grams. Finally, one group’s difference in mass was highly significant. This group had a difference in mas of -0.99
