Two significant political changes that occurred as a result of the actions of Nelson Mandela were the abolishment of apartheid and the establishment of a democratic government. In 1948 the National Party ruled the people of South Africa instituting racial segregation (apartheid). The National Party was responsible for the Population Registration Act of 1950 which required every citizen of South Africa to be grouped and registered according to their racial identity. Laws were issued defending the rights of Whites inhabiting South Africa while annulling the rights of Black South Africans.
