Who is to blame for the downfall of Macbeth? William Shakespeare's timeless tragedy "Macbeth" addresses the transformation of a once noble and heroic man into a tyrant obsessed with ambition and paranoia. Throughout the play, the audience observes the interactions of different people, each of which contributes to Macbeth's downfall in their own distinctive way. Among these individuals, the three witches, Lady Macbeth, and Macbeth himself play key roles in plotting his terrible death. It all began when they met him and told him about his fate. “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee thane of Cawdor!” “All hail Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter!” Macbeth was in disbelief because there already was a Thane of Cawdor, and it wasn’t him. The Thane of Cawdor that came before him betrayed the King by starting a treasonous rebellion against him, he was executed which meant a vacancy for his title as Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth was later gifted the title of Thane of Cawdor as a thank-you for executing MacDonwald (the ex-Thane of Cawdor) at the battle. King Duncan gained the respect and trust of Macbeth, the King valued Macbeth and was proud to have him as his loyal supporter. Or so he thought. Macbeth remembered that the three witches previously called him Thane of Cawdor and the future king. One of the prophecies came true, so he started to believe the witches. He got desperate and made the prophecy come true with murders, starting with the murder of King Duncan. Later Macbeth thought back to what the witches said about Banquo. “Thou shalt be king, though thou be none. So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo!” In fear, Macbeth hires hitmen to murder both Banquo and his son Fleance.
