More than 3.5 million kids under age 14 receive medical treatment for sports injuries each year. In America, in increasing numbers children are pushed to play competitive sports in search for some, “Healthy Competition”. Though American culture leads us to believe competitive sports are helpful and needed in children this in essence could not be farther from the truth. This is because Kids feel pressured and anxious to win. In addition, competitive sports breed hostility. Additionally, contrary to some sources sports actually hinder academic performance. Therefore, children should not partake in competitive sports. To begin, children should not participate in competitive sports because kids feel extremely pressured and anxious to win. As a soccer player I have experienced myself how when two people are playing each other friendliness disappears and the strive to win and hostility dominates. For example, when I was playing against one of my friends in soccer it felt as though he was the enemy and our friendship was put to the brink, all for some," Healthy Competition". This proves how competition creates hostility among participants since in the strive to win people forgot their friendliness and who their friends are and regard the opposing team as there enemy, an obstacle in their path to victory over the others. As it states in the text, "By definition, not everyone can win a contest. If one child wins, another cannot. This means that each child comes to regard others as obstacles to his or her own success".
