Essay: “Companies should be required to adopt a women’s quota.” Since 1940, the percentage of women working in companies has risen rapidly. This is because women have more equal rights to men and the image of the housewife has mostly faded from society, but there still are far more men working in companies than women. One idea on how to solve this problem is that companies should adopt a women’s quota. This essay will discuss this idea and offer a different solution. A study from March 2015 by the New York Times shows that there are more CEOs named John or David than female CEOs. This illustrates that the ratio of women working in companies to men is not something that can just be glossed over. “She’s just working here because of the women’s quota” could become a common phrase. Similarly, women working above men could be respected less as the men think that she had to do less work than they did to get where she is, leading to them not doing their job properly anymore. Furthermore, a women’s quota only reinforces the idea that gender is something to consider when it comes to employing applicants. Therefore, the hirer would again not choose the most qualified applicant but would base their decision on how many women they already employ. This would lead to an all-round decline of the quality of work, because people are not chosen because of their skill.
