Why do you wish to study the program?
With a social work degree, I would be able to achieve my dream of assisting people in need by using my life experience and the skills which I’m going to learn from school and placements. Moreover, I believe that taking this program will prepare me to assist families, anyone dealing with issues that affect their mental health and well-being. Another reason why I wish to study the social work program is that of the experience I had as a homeless youth. At that time when I was chased out of the house, I wasn’t aware of any community agencies or anyone who could refer me to one. However, from my own experience, I find that both my black color, African origins, along with my inability to speak pure English add weight to my oppression as a woman.
Being a black African woman, I am seen as less capable to do challenging jobs compared to men. Therefore, I am considered as a non-suitable candidate for physically and even intellectually demanding jobs.
I have been several times unable to have access to good quality services at the hospital and public transit simply because I could not clearly express myself in English even though Canada is a bilingual Country where both French and English speaking people are supposed to be equally valued. I always feel discriminated because of the unavailability of French-speaking service providers.
In my own African community, men are so arrogant and they usually think that women are wrong and they are right. Women are always being seen as inferior to men. For example, back in Africa, most men were not supposed to wash dishes or even do any house chores, their job was just to go to work and woman would take care of the house and do everything else considered as a not valuable
