The American dream is not as easy as people say it is. The American Dream is being able to afford the necessities you need, without having to struggle and suffer just to put food on a table for their families. People think it’s easy to live the American Dream, but little do they know that there are people out there struggling to support their family. The American Dream is difficult to achieve but very possible if people could find the opportunity and available to them.
The American Dream is seen as people having equal opportunities and achieving whatever they want. This American dream that we all think about is not achievable, which is supported by “The Place Where Ghosts of Salmon Jump,” Of Mice and Men, The Great Gatsby, and the “Puerto Rican Obituary.” All of these sources support the unachievable parts of the American Dream because they all talk about having this dream, but then being set back by inequality, money, unchangeable things, and death. For example, “Puerto Rican Obituary” by Pedro Petri, talks about Puerto Ricans who have moved to America for a better life. They work and work, and work, and yet their dreams are still pushed back due to things such as inequality.

The American Dream is only attainable to those who are privileged and considered truly American. Though many immigrants believe that they can grasp the American Dream, it is always out of reach and can never be achieved. The American Dream can never be accomplished through working hard and determination. Often, people chase the American Dream with high expectations for a new life, and they are often disappointed when failure strikes. Because of this, many of the characters in Of Mice and Men struggle to achieve the dreams they’ve been longing for.
The American dream is having equality, a voice to be heard and stability in one’s life. However, the American Dream is just that, a dream. It cannot be attained because of the power of our government, the ignorant minds of others and the constant want for more. What should be trivial factors in life, such as: race, gender, social class, wealth, etc., all have a significant effect on the impractical American dream. the “TED Talks” video proves this.
Impossible Dreams The meaning of the American Dream can be seen as ”A uniquely American vision of the country consisting of three central ideas. The American dream consists of a belief in America as the new Eden- a land of beauty, bounty, and unlimited promise; a feeling of optimism, created by ever expanding opportunity; and a confidence in the triumph of the individual.” Using this definition of the so called “American dream”, it seems to be a great representation of it at first, until you realize it includes everyone as the individual. From the beginning of the Civil war to the end of the War to End All Wars, the American Dream wasn’t possible due to the treatment of the Native Americans, the inequality between women and men, and the false promises given to the immigrants coming to our country in their time of need.
The American dream at one point was what drew people to American; the right to life, liberty, and the happiness. The American dream is the hope to acquire currency, large homes, raise a middle-class family, and pursue what brings people joy in life. But in the year 2016, the American dream becomes hard to believe in. The American dream may still exist, but it is not equally accessible to all Americans. This is true because the American dream is not affordable for everyone, it is not available to everyone from different degrees of education, and race and ethnicity creates large social barriers.
It is getting harder for immigrants living in the United States to fulfill their American Dream, which causes them to put pressure on their first generation American child to fulfill the dream for them. To many immigrant parents, the Dream consist of getting a high paying stable job, and being able to provide for the rest of the family. However, even if a first generation child goes to a well respected college to get the stable, high paying job of their parents dreams, it is sometimes not enough. Due to language barriers and ethnic sounding names, first generation Americans are constantly being put down by employers who care more about appealing to the White public than provide an educated person a job. It is not attainable for all groups of people for many reasons. For example, according to the video “Who Poisoned Flint, Michigan” "99,00 people were affected/ poisoned with the lead contamination of their water." Also if you 're an hard working person the chances are that you will make your American dream come true. But if you think that you can attain your american dream by not working hard, it is not said that all the american dreams should be identical.
