The homeless population is growing at an alarming rate in the United States with a younger demographic. There are over 4.2 million homeless youth that experience homelessness (Youth Homelessness Overview) so should they be able to work at a young age? Juveniles should be able to work early because they need to support themselves. Also, working early can teach them work ethics and study and learn responsibility. Juveniles need to learn the ability to support themselves. Juveniles supporting themselves can help them learn how to work before becoming a legal adult. Juveniles can support the needs and wants they have and that may relieve some stress from their caregivers. Life skills are important and should be taught to juveniles before having them venture off into the world. Juveniles working early can help them learn to work and help them thrive. Working early can help when they work later on in life so they already have the skills and decrease the risk of homelessness. According to Youth and Young Adults, “34,703 unaccompanied youth were counted as homeless. Of those, 90.6 percent were between the ages of 18 and 24. The remaining 9.3 percent (or 3,240 unaccompanied children) were under the age of 18.”(“Youth and Young Adults - National Alliance to End Homelessness”). It can also be a healthy distraction for the juveniles from toxic situations, such as drugs, crime, and gangs. Finally, working can help employee shortages and can help the businesses flourish, which is not just beneficial to the youth, but also to the economy. Working early for juveniles can help them learn responsibility. Juveniles can learn how everything is earned by learning that they can have more responsibility for the items they own and the lives they live.
