Imagine this, you are on a baseball team with your friends and your team is 0-12. You guys are still having fun and don’t really care about the games, you just like hanging out together and getting the participation trophy. Is it really fair that teams work really hard to win and get a trophy, but you can just show up and hang out with your friends and you will also get a trophy? Therefore, there is no real reason for trying at sports so you can win and get the trophy. Kids should not get trophies for participation because it can make kids like the sport just because of the trophy, not for the actual sport and it doesn’t help them prepare for life in the real world.
John Irving once said, “My old coach used to say that if you were in it for the match, if you were in it for the trophies, you were in it for the wrong reasons”, this is a famous quote about how you shouldn't just play sports for the trophies you should play sports because you like them.
