Questions
1. What is biofuel? List at least three advantages of biofuel over fossil fuel.
Biofuel is fuel made from plant materials through carbon fixation. Three advantages that biofuel has over fossil fuels are; it reduces greenhouse emissions, it helps countries reduce the oil supply trouble by creating a more secure stock, as well it advertises environmental sustainability.
2. Why microalgae hold a great promise as a source for biofuel?
Microalgae hold a great promise as a source for biofuel because the growth rate for microalgae is far quicker then that of fossil fuels and other biofuels. Microalgae would allow the use of unsuitable land for growing crops unlike corn where it takes up a very large amount of arable land. This also would not use as much amount water. Finally microalgae would hold a great promise as a source for biofuel because based on current technology they would serve as an acceptable substance because they could be refined into fuels for transportation vehicles.

What are “biomass”, “productivity”, “AFDW”, and “oil content”?
Biomass is mass derived from living organisms in a certain area. Productivity is the rate of efficient production of new biomass; in the case of the microalgae, they have a possibility to produce a huge proportion of biomass and biofuel much greater than most of the crops. AFDW stands for Ash Free Dry Weight. This refers to a measurement of an organic material’s weight. Oil Content, in undiluted water, is the amount of dispersed
