Many schools ban students from having their phones during school hours or require them to turn them into the office at the beginning of the day. Is this the right decision though? Would it be more beneficial to the student to have their phones or are they just a distraction? As a student, I believe we should be allowed to have our phones during school and here’s why. Phones during school can be seen as a “distraction.” They can also; however, be an educational tool. They are an easy search engine to use to research any question a student might have. Sure you can use the computer, or in our case chromebook, but it is more convenient to take a phone out of our pocket and unlock it than to walk to the computer and wait for it to load. Phones also have educational apps the students can chose to download. For example, I like to use an app called Cram. Cram is a flashcard app in which you can study any material you put in. There are rules for our safety and for our benefit. Not being allowed to have our phones may be a rule put in place to benefit us educationally, but there are other ways of making this rule lenient. I believe students should be allowed their phones. Teachers can have classroom rules to regulate phone use. For example, teachers can set in place a rule that forbids phone use during their lectures. If a student is caught using their phone during a lecture, a first offense could be a warning, and a second offense could be confiscation of phone until the end of that class. Any other time (homework time, study hall, free periods, halls, etc.) students are allowed to use their
