One of the biggest influences that John Locke had on President Jefferson was, what John Locke dubbed, “Natural Rights,” and what Jefferson called, “Unalienable Rights.” Meaning practically the same thing, these rights were very similar, and it is obvious that Jefferson’s version derives from Locke’s ‘Natural Rights.’ John Locke’s version stated that all peoples shall possess the following rights: Life, Liberty, and Property. In this case, life means, that people people will fight to live and want to survive. Liberty refers to being free, and being able to make one’s own decision.
One of these views is that it is an individual natural right to private property. An idea that is practically same as our fifth amendment. Which states, “... nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation”. Without due process. This also leads into another idea of limited government by Locke.
Everyone has their own opinion on government, but I have sided with Thomas Jefferson on this discussion on his claim that the government keeps the people safe. I will also add onto his claim by stating that the government is in place just to protect the rights that we possess. Also to make sure that the citizens don't abuse the rights and privileges they are given. Let's say that government didn't exist, and there was a forest. Well you have two different farmers wanting to take the forest for themselves.
The truth is that through the nature of humanity, government is necessary to maintain control and peace. Societies are created by groups of people who find that living together and helping each other is better than attempting to live on their own. However, once a society gets very large with many different types of people it becomes necessary to implement some kind of government to suppress the inherent evil in man and to maintain peace and happiness. Humans need each other to succeed because it is more effective to work together than alone. This truth embraces all of human experiences because it is human nature to want to work together and this truth uses that part of humanity to justify the need for a government.
Perhaps the most obvious rights Americans enjoy are acquired from the freedoms of speech, religion, assembly, and press guaranteed in the First Amendment. It is this amendment that gives America its environment of freedom, because if expression were restrained, oppression of the people would soon imitate. As George Washington said, "If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter. " When the people can 't voice their perspectives, tyranny begins. The government cannot take control over my opinions and thoughts.
Last, but not least, the right to Limited Government. Without limiting our government they could gain way too much power and leave us with none. “Power to the people!” wouldn’t mean anything, because the people wouldn’t have power if government wasn’t limited.
