Why Did The Tokugawa Shoguns Isolate Japan
The shoguns implemented a series of laws in order to tighten control over the daimyo and the foreigners. Why did the Shoguns do this? The shoguns wanted to remain having a sense of authority over their citizens, but also wanted to sustain a compact government. Japanese ships were strictly prohibited to travel to foreign countries If any Japanese returns from residing there, he/she must be put to death; foreign ships were banned from Japanese ports. Any ships who ignored this order will be destroyed and its crew and passengers will be put to death. The start, A series of threats were sent from the united states towards japan. They were sent through an armada of ships led by commander Matthew C. Perry; they were sent to open the trading ports with japan again to gain access to their rice resources since at that time they was a food shortage back in the U.S. Many opposed the idea of the shogun signing the edicts made by the people threatening them, but they still signed them to protect their country from the united state’s armada of ships. They knew that if thye went to war with them they would lose. The ships and the a lot of other things that the americans brought over were more advanced compared to what the japanese had at that time. So, Japan started to copy europe in some aspects, such as politics, military, social structure and culture . But for today i’m going to be narrowing down the changes to one specific change… Social. The social advancements were in a way very useful but also very hurtful, depending on who you ask. For the daimyo and samurai the change was good they got better weapons which helped them defend their country more and had werre abit less restricted. But the class that was most affected was the elite warrior class also known as the SHOGUNS. They lost all of their power and were replaced by emperor.The reason for this was that Japan, after letting America use their trade ports, realized that they were behind in military technology alongside other things like social structure, vehicles etc... so they began to become modernized.They started industrializing and becoming more modern in all aspects.This resulted in the immediate fall of the shoguns and the rise of the emperor and a more democratic government. a european type of government.
