Kelsey is very likable and easy to root for. Her backstory is clear regarding her parents’ accident and being an orphan. She longs for family and belonging, but has abandonment issues (which should be highlighted) and she has trust issues. She has a hard exterior (sarcastic, tough, independent), but she’s vulnerable.
She doesn’t believe in fate or fully in herself, and by the end she does believe in fate, but her character arc could be stronger. Her emotional goal is being loved and family, her external goal comes late. As mentioned, it might be effective if she’s trying to get her parent’s property back for the payoff. Even perhaps end with her back at her family home.
While one assumes that the character is true to the novel, the alternative to the current Kelsey is to create a heroine that is older, perhaps spoiled and self-centered, as well as being more of a fish out of water (afraid of animals, out of her element in the jungle).
