Explanatory Essay: “The Diary Of Anne Frank” “Sometime I wish the end would come…whatever it is.” Margot said on page 164. The drama, “The Diary of Anne Frank” by Albert Hackett and Francis Goodrich. It is based on the diary of a young Jewish girl named Anne Frank, and the struggle her and her family went through during their time in hiding. In the play “The Diary of Anne Frank” historical events are portrayed by dialogue, stage directions, and Anne’s personal diary. To start with historical events are portrayed in the play by dialogue. As an example Miep states to everyone in the attic, “The invasion has begun! The invasion!” (pg 179). Also “British, Americans, French, Dutch, Poles, Norwegians… all of them! More than four thousand ships!” This shows that dialogue explains what is happening around them, during their time in the attic. Meep explains that the invasion has started which mades the family very hopeful, for their future. Another example is when Mr. Kraler speaks to Mr. Frank, “But you can’t get near a doctor theses days… They’re so busy.” (pg 164) This connects to the claim because it tells us more about what is going on at the time. As shown in the text the Nazis found out about the Franks, “The street door below is forced open…. we hear the thud of the gun butts in the door.” (pg 185) This shows historical events being shown by stage direction, because it was when they were being found out. Another example is “There is complete silence as they all stand to hear any sound from below.” (pg 147) This connects to the claim because it shows the struggle and fears they went through.
