West Orange High School US History I Honors Summer Assignment 2016 “Exploration, Discovery and Settlement, 1492-1700.” Three Native American civilizations that existed before European contact include the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans. These civilizations lived in settlements ranging is size. These settlements contained different tribes. During the 1400’s technology began to revolutionize with the Renaissance. As science and technology evolved so did transportation. This change had a huge impact on helping Europe explore the Western Hemisphere. Native Americans went to the Spaniards to work on farms or in mines. The asiento system was made because diseases were killing the Native Americans. This new system made the Spanish pay a tax for every slave they brought from West Africa to the Americas. The Spanish used native Americans to work for them and help their farms and mines grow. Europeans mainly focused on trade between them and the Americas. The French slowly made settlements in the “new world”. In 1600 Spain and Portugal were the only ones with claimed territory, that changed by 1700. Europe and France gained a lot of land and the Dutch didn’t gain a lot. No matter who owns it, most of the territory claimed was on the coast to make trade easier. “English Colonies in America.” England was afraid of Spain getting too powerful, the more land they owned the more powerful they got. England wanted them to be the richest and most powerful, not Spain. Queen Elizabeth used “sea dogs” like Drake to attack Spanish ships and steal their treasures. French Colonization of North America (1608 & 1611.) The French said they have a friendship/ partnership with the Native Americans. The picture shows the French looking bold and fancy while the Native Americans are working for them in the background. “Objections Against Enclosure (1548)” by John Hales. Enclosure was an economical and religious problem. It caused a shortage of jobs, which didn't help with the growing population. Enclosure also went against god by showing the greed of people and the ungratefulness of what they had. Hales said that when the enclosure movement was created there were not as many people who needed jobs, and they were at risk of getting attacked. In his time there is no more fear of attack, and the population had a major growth. More people need jobs and enclosure isn't needed anymore. The quote means something, in this case sheep, were supposed to help and make money, but in turn failed and lost money.
