The story of Frankenstein is about Victor Frankenstein, his hardships in life, and how he deals with them. Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, incorporates the theme of nature being renewing, which contributes to the meaning of the text. For instance, this text implies nature is rejuvenating because the characters in the book turn over a new leaf each time they are in nature. The monster that Frankenstein created experiences this when he is feeling depressed, but then walks into the forest, “what before was desert and gloomy should now bloom with the most beautiful flowers and verdure. My senses were gratified and refreshed by a thousand scents of delight, and a thousand sights of beauty.” (Shelley 82) The monster was refreshed by the coming of spring. He is very unhappy with his way of living life, and the wretch just wants to be accepted. Subsequently, the changing of seasons in nature highlights renewal. This renewing quality is expressed because “ [Cherval] was alive to every new scene; joyful when he saw the beauties of the setting sun, and more happy when he beheld it rise, and recommence a new day. [Cherval] pointed out to [Frankenstein] the shifting colours of the landscape, and the appearances of the sky.” ‘This is what it is to live,’ he cried; ‘now I enjoy existence!’”(Shelley 112) Victor is energized by Cheval's love for life on their journey. Cherval is experiencing many new things that Victor has already enjoyed in life. Cherval emphasizes how sad Frankenstein seems compared to him, but Frankenstein feels this way because of his horrid creation and his actions. Thus the theme of nature in this text helps the readers understand the meaning of the book better.
