Imagine a city. Rundown. Full of crime, where vigilantes and superheroes fight evil. Hmm? Sounds familiar doesn’t it? Is it a Marvel story? No. Is it DC? No. It's even better. Let me visualize it for you. “Bang. Her mother was dead. Bang. Her Father. Bang Evie […] The renegades had not come.”(Meyer 15). Not enough? How about, “ But then, seemingly overnight…Hope. Bright and sparkling hope dressed up in capes…..justice down upon your foes. (Meyer 3). This is the city of Gatlon in which Nova is trying to take down the Renegades, in the city where crime runs free and Renegades are there to save the day from the Anarchists. Or are they? In the story, Renegades- by Marissa Meyer, a prevalent theme is that; Having a more significant/more important …show more content…
In the book, the author says, “But if she made it-if she became a Renegade-she could make a difference…. And if she succeeded….. be seen as a parasite in society.”(Meyer 171). This passage is important to the theme. After all, it reveals the big idea of social role when Nova says, “to no longer be seen as a parasite in society.” This is important because it shows us Nova's social role/class and the rest of the anarchists. This evaluation of the social role of Nova and the Anarchists impacts the amount of power they have in society as well. This is because it shows that the Anarchists are trying to infiltrate the Renegades Society which tells us that the Renegades have more power than the Anarchists and that the Renegades hold a higher power and social role which gives them an advantage in society and conflicts between the two groups, Anarchists and Renegades. Adding on the author states, “The word sent a shiver along Nova's spine. Classified. Classified was exactly what she was there for.”(Meyer 241). This scene is important because it first describes the big Idea of social role. Additionally, this also showed the big idea of power when it states that Nova …show more content…
Nova overheard the detonator talking about how she was disloyal to the anarchists and “killed her” But all of this changed when, “A gunshot rang across the grass………hitting the boards of the theater,”(Meyer 538), “I pulled the trigger.”(Meyer 539). Overall changing the balance of power. And this is because of Nova's place in the social role which made her exert power in this scenario. We also see this type of behavior in the real world with the “famous” “rich” and “important” people treating the lower “normal” people with less power due to their social role negatively. After people gain and utilize their social power in a negative way everything and everyone is affected, as reciprocated by the theme Now the readers have to wait until the second book is read to find out what happened next. And the truth of Nova, Ace Anarchy, and the
