Things Fall Apart-Expository Theme Essay
Whenever someone reads a novel they always try to determine the moral of the story, so that they apply it in their daily lives. “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek” stated by Barack Obama. Change is basic and fundamental need for any personal willing to excel in life. In the novel “Things Fall Apart”, the reader can identify that one of the themes of the story is change, and can also determine how change emerged in the story mentally, physically, emotionally, and social.
The first evidence that determines that the theme of the story is change takes place in the first chapter of the novel. Cited from the text, “His wives, especially the youngest, who lived in perpetual fear of his fiery temper, and so did his children. / But on his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness” (13), this explains Okonkwo’s characteristics and how he did not want anyone to discover a weakness with in him. Through Okonkwo’s journey the reader could notice that his thoughts changed which lead him to committing suicide and sinning according to his people. Also, we notice how people can change their religion by wanting to feel like other or be treated like others.
