The main character in the book Eye of the Needle by Ken Follett is a German spy during World War II. He goes by many names throughout the book such as Die Nadel, but he is most often referred to as Henry Faber. The leading question throughout the book is, is Faber good or bad? In my opinion, Faber is a good person due to three explanations. The initial reason is, Faber is doing what he needs to do for his country. A further justification would be that Faber does feel some emotion toward what he does. The final reason to support Henry Faber’s good character would be that he helps others when it’s safe.. Faber makes it clear that he feels emotions even when he wouldn’t like to. The prime example of this is when Faber gets sick after killing someone. “Faber leaned against a tree, shivering, and threw up”(127). The next reason comes from when Faber falls in love with Lucy Rose. “It was the first time he had ever felt reluctance to kill”(296). Guilt and affection are two emotions that good people experience. The last explanation for Faber being a good person would be that he helps others when it’s safe to do so. When Faber was walking the main road after leaving the car he had stolen, he came across Richard Porter who was having car troubles. Faber had said, “Having trouble?(179). Since Faber knew how to fix it, it shows his morals were high enough to help. This also relates to him doing what he needs to do for his country because he knew he would probably get a ride from him. The next example is when Faber offered to help David Rose since he is a cripple. “Would you like me to drive you?”(262). Helping others is a key component to being a good person. Throughout the book Faber has shown in many ways that he’s a good person. He protects his country, feels emotion, and helps others. Faber is a good person working for a bad
