Reflection 4 The book of Ezra featured the first and second return of the exiled from Babylon to Judah, the restoration of the temple in Jerusalem, intermarriage issue and the confession and separation. The book can also be divided into two main sections, the first dealing with the first return of the Jews under the leadership of Zerubbabel and the second with the return of Ezra and the restoration of Jewish worship in Jerusalem. These events provide important lessons for us regarding faith, repentance, and obedience to God. The first event in the book of Ezra is the first return of the Jews from Babylon. After the Babylonian exile, the Jews were allowed to return to Jerusalem under the Persian Empire. This return was led by Zerubbabel, a descendant …show more content…

Ezra was a priest and a scribe who was commissioned by the king of Persia to return to Jerusalem and teach the law of Moses to the Jews. Upon his arrival, he discovered that the Jews had intermarried with the people of the land, which was forbidden by God's law. Ezra led the people in confessing their sin and separating themselves from the people of the land. The lesson that can be learned is the importance of obedience to God's law. The Jews had disobeyed God's commandment not to intermarry with the people of the land, and this disobedience led to their downfall. We must obey God's commands, even when they go against societal norms. We must resist the temptation to compromise our faith for the sake of fitting in with the world. The issue of intermarriage was a significant problem for the Jews during the time of Ezra, and it is still a problem that we face today. The Jews returned to their homeland and rebuilt the temple, but they also needed to reform their spiritual life. This required confession, separation, and a renewed commitment to following God. We need to be aware of the influence of the world around us and be intentional about living a life that is pleasing to God.
