A green light flashing across the bay is all Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) has left of his lost love Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). Desperate to get Daisy back, Gatsby throws exotic parties and makes many rash decisions to have her love once more. The Great Gatsby (2013) is an adaptation of a great American novel of the twentieth century, The Great Gatsby, under the direction of Baz Luhrmann in which he takes big risks in the style and theme of his moves.. The movie goes through the life of self-made millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and his love for Daisy. While many critics believe that The Great Gatsby (2013) is not a good adaptation of the novel due to the overuse of voice overs and a modern spin, I believe that the movie is a well-created adaptation …show more content…

The movie and novel are set around the mysterious and aweing characteristics of Jay Gatsby. Leonardo DiCaprio being casted as Jay Gatsby may be the movies greatest quality. The performance of DiCaprio truly captures the character of Jay Gatsby and flawlessly executes it. From the speaking style to the physical mannerisms of DiCaprio, allows for the Gatsby’s obscure character to be brought to life. The stellar role of Jay Gatsby is one of DiCaprio’s mesmerizing performances, and can possibly not be topped. Along with the role of Gatsby, Luhrmann also exceeds in the casting of Nick Carraway and Daisy Buchanan. The two castings of theses characters by Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan are almost as perfectly executed as DiCaprio’s role. Maguire fulfills the role of Nick Carraway by portraying the innocent and up and coming young adult who gets hurtled into a world that he is not ready for. His speaking is done nearly as well as DiCaprio through his soft-spoken and alertness. The fragile, young, and innocent character of Daisy is beautifully performed by Carey Mulligan. She took the role and made it into her own, slightly evolving the character from the novel to make her more realistic and not as perfect as Gatsby had thought. Film critic, Matt Zoller Seitz, is among the critics who believe this. In Seitz’s review, “The Great Gatsby (2013), he notes that the film was not a “disaster” per se, yet it did unrealistically portray many scenes of the novel. In order for the film to work in Seitz’s eyes, he believes that the film should follow the same style and aesthetics of the original novel. Seitz argues that the party scenes from The Great Gatsby (2013) are much too vibrant and modern because the film is set in the twenties, which was a prosperous economic time. In his review, Seitz states “All this busywork might astonish if Luhrmann’s heart were in it - but is it?” (Seitz 2). This quote exemplifies how Seitz believes that Luhrmann did not direct this film to the best of his ability.
