The First World War was very tragic, with many casualties, land destroyed, and many people traumatized. The battle of 1918 on the western front had many key factors that led to the ally’s success. The three key factors that led to the western takeover were Germans Surrendering, improved technology/backup, and Tactical Improvements. Without these key points the war might have ended up differently. Germans Surrendering On the 21st of March, 1918, the Germans launched a large scaled assault called “Operation Michael.” The attack broke through the ally’s defense. Germany’s front lines had advanced 40 miles westward and sent the allies to retreat. The attack was a success in pushing back the allied forces, but the Germans sustained heavy casualties losing 380,000 men in …show more content…
Advances in technology were put to good use, argues Gary Sheffield of the University of Wolverhampton. When the allied armies advanced in the summer of 1918, they were heavily backed up by tanks, sophisticated artillery barrages, aircraft performing scouting, ground attack, bombing, and artillery-spotting roles. To put that into perspective when 600,000 American corps advanced on the Germans, 189 tanks, 821 aircrafts and 2,700 artillery pieces were there to support them. The fact that they had such great advances in equipment at the time made it a lot easier to push Germany back and take the land. Not only that, but the allies had received more assistance from the US. The United States joined WW1 as a part of the Allies in April 1917. Later during 1918 men flooded Europe an estimated 10,000 per day. The American soldiers first saw action in Marne area of France in May 1918. The Americans did not win the war for the Allies but helped to further demoralize Germany and help the Allies. Better equipment and more troops made pushing Germany back and further demoralizing them a key factor to the Western
