Work Conditions in the 1800’s were worse than bad. A regular work day was 11.4 hours for Men women and children. Many factories had rapidly moving pieces of machinery. Those machines where very dangerous to work around. These machines being fast moving belts to crushers that wouldn't stop on a dime.
These women worked very hard, but sometimes weren’t being treated fairly enough. “There were more females (12,519 women) than males (1,109 males) working in the factory” (Doc A). This means that women had to do most of the work. A worker’s day at work was another hardship. “They would commence their work at 4:05 am and end at 7:30 pm.
In Document B the women in the okaya plant got about 8 hours of free time since they worked from 4:30 in the morning to 7:30 at night. The eight hours they did get would have to be used to sleep. The eight hours of free time is only if the plant was not busy if it was busy they would get only 6 hours since work was from 4:30 am to 10:00 pm. Than for every two weeks the workers worked they got only 1 holiday day off. Also in japan there were no weekends so these people would work everyday till a holiday arrived.

Factory Working Working in the 1800’s was hard and was very dangerous, by the mid 1800’s America was using machines to produce most things such as clothing, shoes, watches, , guns, and farming machines. The workers would work an average of 11.4 hours a day. The workers were very tired. The factories were very rugged and dangerous, there were fast rapidly moving parts exposed and that cuased many accidents with adults and children.
Even though they were already being paid half what men would’ve been paid it became an excuse to become free of the controlling families they were a part of and, challenge the stigma of womanly dependence. Even with thirteen-hour work days and six-day work weeks they found time to do an abundance of time to create groups and interests for themselves. Everyone, unless you were richer, had to work approximately 14 to 16 hours per day, six days per week. Child labor was a big problem, most of them worked as often as their parents did. It was better for the factory owners to hire children. They, for one, were easier to control than the adult. THey could also fit in the machines to get things out because of how small they were.
Along with the distance, families were separated by long working hours. “[Before] dawn my labor drives me forth tis night when I am free…” (Document 2) Besides children, factories also liked women workers because they were cheaper than men and were afraid to complain. Women worked 12-16 hours a day and six days a week. “A stranger am I to my child; and he one to me.”
Child labor during the 18th and 19th century did not only rapidly develop an industrial revolution, but it also created a situation of difficulty and abuse by depriving children of edjucation, good physical health, and the proper emotional wellness and stability. In the late 1700 's and early 1800 's, power-driven machines replaced hand labor for making most manufactured items. Many of America 's factories needed a numerous amount of workers for a cheap salary. Because of this, the amount of child laborers have been growing rapidly over the early 1800s.
In the early 1800s working for wages started to become a problem in America. Many people thought that working for wages kept people dependent. If people did not own their own business then they were ultimately under the rule of a boss or master. Thomas Jefferson mentions that freedom is destroyed by dependence when it comes to people working for someone else and they do not produce or own their own property. There was also a social stigma for those who worked for wages.
Farmers and Industrial Workers in the Gilded Age In a time when industrialization was booming, immigrants were racing towards the “American Dream”, and cities were growing towards the sky, the United States was thriving. As a country, the United States went from rural, to mostly urban, which made America “the world’s largest industrial power” as stated by John Green. Since the U.S. had become mostly urban, this left the very few rural workers (farmers), and even some of the industrial workers unhappy. Many Irish women became servants or domestic workers, while many Irish men labored in coal mines and built railroads and canals. They suffered from malnutrition and exhaustion. They were innocent children that were locked up in factories, like they had committed a crime.
