Nobody’s Safe As a parent you want only the best for your child, from birth until the child leaves your home. Parents save money for their college funds, so that they can go and further their education. But what if while their child is there, they are put at risk? What if the institution allowed a convicted rapist to be around your child? Would that make parents more weary to send their child to that college? Malik Richmond, a sophomore at Youngstown university, was convicted of rape as a senior in high school. He was 18 years old, when he went to a party that was serving alcohol to all of its guests. In the article From Furious to Fearless: Faculty Action and Feminist Praxis in Response to Rape Culture on College Campuses, it states that “ many administrators have inadequate training and understanding about sexual violence.” The only training they have had with dealing with rape is through the schools they work for, and it’s a minimal amount they learn. There is really only one solution that colleges could utilize to help with these problems, ask the state to send a representative to handle these problems. In many cases the victim is usually blamed for the offense that took place. They are usually asked the controversial questions, “ Were you drinking?” or “Were you wearing provocative clothing?” These are the sort of questions that are the reasons that “ helps rapists deny their perpetration, and shift the blame from the perpetrator to the victim.” Instead the person advocating for the person that was mistreated, should be asking the perporator those outrageous questions. They need to find out whether they were drinking and what made them think they had a right to do that horrific crime to someone. There needs to be more blame put on the person who committed the offense and not the person who had to endure it. When the rapists realize they are going to be held accountable for their actions they will not be as quick to rape, and much less likely to rape multiple times. Colleges making money off athletes that
