Have you ever wondered what the world would be like without technology? There would be much more communication and much more of people thinking for themselves. Ray Bradbury comments on the negative aspects of society through his depiction of technology misuse and a lack of thinking. First, Bradbury illustrates how technology can be harmful if misused or overused. For example, Montag lays on a bed separate from his wife. “He lay far across the room from her on a winter island separated by an empty sea” (45). This shows that Montag and Mildred do not have a good relationship and they are not very connected with each other. This also shows that the mood is depressing because Montag and Mildred never spend real time together ,for Mildred is always watching television or listening to her seashell radio not spending time with Montag. For example, Mildred backed away when she found out that Montag had books. “ Mildred backed away as if she were suddenly confronted by a pack of mice that had came out of the floor” (69). Mildred thinks that books are scary because the government made them illegal and all of society are scared of books as well. As a result the mood is tense because they don't know what they are going to do about it. Furthermore, the people were looking out their windows and doors looking for Montag. “He imagined thousands of faces … like gray animals peering from electric caves ; faces with gray colorless eyes, tongues and gray thoughts” (161). This shows that people are lifeless and dull, and emotionless. This also shows that the people are not thinking for themselves they are just doing what everybody else is doing and what the newscasters are saying to do.
