Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury and The Martian Chronicles written by Ray Bradbury have very close connections throughout both books. One way they share a close connection is through literary elements. Three literary elements that can be connected in Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles are setting, personification, and symbolism.
The first example of a literary element that can be associated with The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451 is the setting. Setting is very important in books because it sets the scene for the writer. Ray Bradbury expresses the use of setting very thoroughly in both books because he needs to set the time period of both books. In both of these novels, the time period is during the Cold War era. The first example of personification is from The Martian Chronicles,”She heard him crying out to the birds as they rose higher, like ten thousand hot sparkles, so many red-yellow fireworks in the heavens, tugging the canopy like a flower petal, burning through the wind” (Bradbury, The Martian Chronicles, 6). The personification is the birds are tugging at the canopy. Tugging at an object is a human quality, and birds do not tug at canopies. An example of personification from Fahrenheit 451 is, "The firehouse trembled as a great flight of jet planes whistled a single note across a black morning sky" (Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451, 30). Jet planes do not whistle. When it says the jet planes whistle, it means that the engine is making a high pitch sound when it is being used. Obviously whistling is not an action a plane can perform but it is a way to illustrate the sound of the plane. Both examples have a very close connection because both of these events are happening at the same time of the day, and they are happening at night, in the dark sky. One personification is about a place, and the other one is about jet planes. Even though they don’t correlate, they still have a …show more content…
In Fahrenheit 451, mirrors were a path meant for one to reflect on themselves. Granger says to Montag that they will go and build a mirror factory. (Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451, Pg157). Granger tells Montag to help him build a mirror factory because they believed it would give people a chance to reflect on themselves. In The Martian Chronicles, The people basically extinct the Martian population. This part of the book is just like the western history because it mirrors the past (Levine). Both books have a way of reflecting in different ways. Fahrenheit 451 actually talks about reflecting on the past in the book. Montag is the one who wants to reflect on his life. In The Martian Chronicles, it is a reflection, but it is flying under the radar. The book is reflecting on the history of The United States of America. Both books share a common example of symbolism, but it is shown in totally different
