The novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury combined with the OP-ED article Uncle Ray’s Dystopia by Tim Kreider proves that Fahrenheit 451 was an accurate prediction of life in 2023. In the novel society, at first, glance appears to be enjoyable. The people live only to feel pleasure and nothing else. But in reality, they became ignorant, stupid, and unable to feel true emotion. The OP-ED article compares current life to different pieces that Ray Bradbury wrote on the prediction of the future. Kreider compares elements of his novels with the present society. In the book Fahrenheit 451, society becomes absorbed in believing that the only emotion people should feel is a pleasure. At first, that may seem like an easy, enjoyable life. But it comes with a cost to people's ability to mentally function. People in society became unable to process things that have deep meaning. In the article Uncle Ray’s Dystopia, the author comments, “media seemed geared toward the concerted goal of forcing me to know, against my will, about a product called ‘Lady Gaga,’ I thought: Denham’s Dentifrice,” (Kreider, 5). In this quote, Kreider compares hearing celebrity news to an obnoxious unimportant jingle ad from Fahrenheit 451. He made this comment to express his dislike for having insignificant information he is not interested in being drilled into his brain by the media. In the novel, all books are banned in society. If a book is reported to be found firemen are sent to the home, and then they burn everything to ash. This is done because they believe that if they get rid of literature and access to knowledge it will make people happy, but it ends up making them emotionally numb. This compares to current society because some states in the United States of America have begun certain books that they believe are inappropriate, “The vast majority of the books targeted by these groups for removal feature LGBTQ+ characters or characters of color, and/or cover race and racism in American history, LGBTQ+ identities, or sex education” (Bayron). Some state officials believe that these topics are “too much” for young audiences, but the contents of the books are reflections of problems society has or is currently facing. This is negatively affecting people because it is slowly making people ignorant and unaware of important subjects, also the demographic that is being affected is the future generations who are the future of the world.
