Ava Macdonald Compare and Contrast Essay; Fahrenheit 451
“There must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there, you don’t stay for nothing.” - Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451. The dystopian novel that has a policy to ban books. Despite the obvious differences between modern day society and the society in Fahrenheit, there are a lot more similarities than you may think.
Starting with the obvious, books. In Fahrenheit all books are banned no matter the contents inside, whereas in modern day we have a select number of books that are banned. A few examples are All boys aren’t blue by George M. Johnson, Out of Darkness by Ashley Hope Pérez, and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray

In Modern day society, we too have billboards, but ours are not nearly as big.
Technology is another noticeable similarity between the two societies, in the book their only source of information is through a television. Therefore, they are forced to believe every bit of information they are fed. In our society, many people use the internet as their main source of information, but we still have access to other sources such as books, newspapers, and so much more.
One big difference between societies is the firemen. In modern day society firemen put out fires that are started and save people from fires. It is quite the opposite in Fahrenheit. In their society, firemen set things on fire, they don’t save people from the flames, they just burn down buildings and most importantly, they burn books. Instead of having a big water hose to ‘kill’ the fire, they have something more like a flame thrower, allowing them to start fires easily, hinting at the first three rules of the firemen: “1. Answer alarm quickly 2. Start fire swiftly 3. Burn everything…” Ray Bradbury pg. 32 Fahrenheit
