“There must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing” (48). This is an iconic line from one of America’s most iconic pieces of literature. Also known as Fahrenheit 451 which was written by Ray Bradbury and was published in 1953. This book was written during the Korean war and times were tough. Thus Ray was inspired to write a story about the future to come if America continued on this destructive path. Evaluating the theme, character development, and conflict clearly demonstrate that Fahrenheit 451 is a timeless way of obtaining a deeper understanding of the importance of books. Conflict is an overwhelming element that is prominent throughout the novel. When Montag discovers the importance and wonders of books his world is flipped upside down. Montag begins to go against all of his morals. He steals, lies, and hides books from his boss, Beatty. When he later confesses to Mildred doubt begins to creep into his mind. “He was looking not only at her, but for himself and what he must do, in her face” (63). His body was telling him to take the easy route and confess and go back to his old ways. Though as he looked into Mildred eyes and saw his reflection, he began to think deeper and he realized that deep down he already knew that he must pursue this new path despite the hardships it might bring.
